Newsletter no.1 – VET TO VET – Capacity Building in Western Balkans
Public Institution Secondary School of Traffic and Communications Sarajevo is a participant in an international project called “VET to VET – Capacity Building in the Western Balkans”. In this project, also participate vocational schools from European Union countries: Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Slovenia and Croatia, which are also mentors “twin school” of the secondary vocational schools from the Western Balkans: Montenegro – 2 schools, Kosovo – 2 schools and from Bosnia and Herzegovina our school. The “twin and mentor” of our school is ROC Noorderpoort High School in Groningen, the Netherlands. As a part of project activities, a short student mobility is planned, lasting for 4 weeks, with the participation of 4 of our students in an internship in Groningen. Preparations for the selection and departure of our students for mobility to the Netherlands began in mid-December, when we surveyed the second and the third grade students who are educating for the professions of car mechanics, car electricians and road traffic technicians. 24 students applied with whom we held two meetings and explained to them all the details regarding student mobility as well as all the conditions they must fulfill in order to go on student mobility in Groningen. The second meeting was also attended by the parents of the students. At the beginning of January, we conducted a test of English language proficiency, fluency and accuracy of answering questions for the registered students and we selected the 12 best candidates. On January 24, Ms. Minka Kloppenborg from the ROC Noorderpoort School in Groningen arrived at the Observation Mission. Another member of the Observation Mission who was supposed to come to Sarajevo was her colleague Ms. Eva Hoitzing, but unfortunately she injured her leg and didn’t come to Sarajevo, but she was present at the mission all the time via a video link. On January, 25 and 26, twelve selected students were interviewed by colleagues Kloppenbur and Hoitzing at the Aziza Hotel in Baščeršija. At the focus group meeting, which was held with our school teachers, management and employees, on January 27, 2022, Ms. Kloppenburg expressed very positive impressions and praised all twelve students and pointed out that they all met the criteria for student mobility. However, as the project was planned for only four students to go to student mobility in Groningen, two car electricians were selected: Nedim Mišanović and Rijad Cero (grade – III7) and two car mechanics: Danin Rajkić (gradeII3) and Haris Sofić (grade-III3). Ms. Kloppenburg promised that by the end of the year they will find an opportunity to invite other students, who were interviewed, to mobility and to visit their school outside of this project. It was also agreed that the students in Groningen will be accompanied by the teacher Igor Smiljanić in the period March 28, 2022 to April 11, 2022 and the teacher Damir Bradarić in the period of April 11, 2022 to April 22, 2022.
On March 18, 2022, a parents’ meeting was held, in the presence of all 12 students, who were shortlisted to go to mobility, where they were informed of the results and impressions of colleagues Kloppenburg and Hoitzing, by school principal and project manager. Also, at that meeting, terms were defined regarding the preparation for departure, such as checking the validity of passports and presenting certificates of vaccination of students for Covid-19. So, until the students leave for mobility, March 28, 2022 all preparations were successfully carried out. On March 28, 2022 when was planned to travel to mobility in Groningen, four students accompanied by their parents gathered at our school, where a short agreement was held and then accompanied by the project manager Kemal Jaganjac and the teacher Igor Smiljanic, who will be with them for the first 14 days of their stay on mobility, they went and performed a rapid antigen test on Covid-19. At 2:40 p.m. the team flew to Vienna and from Vienna in the early evening, they flew to Amsterdam. From Amsterdam, they continued their journey by train to Groningen, where they were met by the host and the guide in charge of them, Martin Hoekstra, who accompanied them to the hotel near the city centre where they were accommodated. After several hours of travel, the students arrived at their destination full of positive impressions, where they started the realization of their project activities the next day. For the first day of the visit to Groningen (March, 29), the students visited the Noorderpoort hotspot, which is a part of the large ROC Noorderpoort high school complex, and they met our host Hans Buissink who presented the activities of this organization to them. After that, they visited the stadium of Football Club Groningen, and accompanied by Martin they visited the service “AH Garage” in which students did their internships. On March 30 our students started their educational part of mobility, in the service “AH Garage”, whose owner Ali warmly welcomed our students, met them and gave initial instructions regarding the practice in this service. The working hours of the service and thus the working hours of our students in it were from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our students used bicycles to get to and from the service. On March 31, the students accompanied by teacher Igor, visited the Groningen forum, the educational and cultural center, which was opened in November 2019, and is expected to be visited by about 1.6 million guests a year. The forum is located in the city center of Groningen and it is a place for all who are interested in the world of today and the possibilities of tomorrow. There are grand exhibitions, the Storyworld Museum, five cinemas, a library, a Smartlab and a terrace with fantastic views.
The students also visited the Groningen Museum, which is located below the surface of the earth at sea level, which is very interesting. The main topic was JR: CHRONICLE which takes the viewers on a journey through the artist’s career. He gained worldwide fame with Kikita, a 20-meter-tall photograph of a curious kid who is playfully peering over the border fence between Mexico and the United States. He didn’t buy a camera to take photos, he found it in the Paris Metro, and then he started taking photographies of graffiti artists in tunnels and around the world. There were also a lot of pictures and videos on the topic of human rights. The Museum keeps one of the oldest flints and steels from the Stone Age. It contains all the historically important objects such as coins, crosses, many paintings and much more. In the 1980s, the city of Groningen had a successful graffiti scene – an artistic movement that emerged from subcultures including punk and hip-hop. This exhibition brings back the pioneering years of local graffiti and street art through stories, photographs and film. There are also a lot of sculptures by different artists and some silverware and plates. In addition to this, there were other very interesting sculptures and other objects in the museum. On Sunday, April 3, students did laundry, rest and went on a cycling trip around the city. They were impressed by the city, its cleanness and easy access to everything necessary for a normal life in urban conditions. Cycling around the city is very safe due to the fact that bicycle lanes are separated from pedestrian lanes and lanes for motor vehicles. As part of the V2V project, on April 4, the teacher Igor Smiljanić visited Noorederpoort High School of Administration and Business in Groningen and got acquainted with the educational process in this institution by attending classes of English Language and Human Resource Management realized by Professor Peter. At the end of the classes, an evaluation was performed and the Dutch educational system was compared with ours from several angles. In Dutch educational system, the special attention is paid to the progress of each student, and each student is approached individually. Students’ needs and abilities are taken into account. The classes are designed in terms of planning them with other related subjects. At the beginning of the school year, teachers make agreement and preparation for the areas to which special attention must be paid. It is a way to make the curriculum and learning outcomes much easier to achieve.
Učenici zatim dobiju zadatak i lagano ga rješavaju.
Peter’s classes are simplified as much as possible, but all the advantages of such a method of work can be seen. Students are very well explained what is expected of them after that class, and they are not given too much information that will discourage them at the beginning. It is very well considered how much real knowledge students can really acquire at that moment. Step by step, at the beginning of the class, teacher Peter repeats the material from the previous lesson. He involves his students in the work by asking questions from the last week. He briefly explains the new material and what he expects to be adopted by the next hour. After that, students are then given a task and they solve it easily. The atmosphere in the classroom is pleasant and lively. Students ask questions. They seek advice. The teacher talks to each student about the topic and other topics as well. Classes usually last 60 minutes, but the teacher usually completes the class after 45 minutes and leaves students enough time to prepare for the next class. As for the evaluation of teaching, in the end each student is expected to pass a test with clear criteria in order to be able to continue. The final exam is always attended by two teachers, and exams can be written or oral. What is also very important is the school itself, which is designed so that students want to spend as much time in it, and thus be with their teachers. This refers primarily to the interior, student rooms, learning, etc. There is a large space in the central part of the building where students can have lunch and refresh themselves, and most importantly socialize. From April 5, to April 8, 2022, a seminar on the use of VR technology in education was organized by ROC Noorderpoort in the city of Groningen, where our school also took part, and the seminar participants were schools from Italy, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands. During the two-day seminar, participants were introduced to the activities of school representatives in the field of developing the use of VR technology in the future and the best practices of online learning during the Covid pandemic. They also talked about the programs that school representatives have already used with their students in this field of virtual technology (GLUE) and the development of 3D technology, but also the need to provide adequate equipment (5G routers). The possibilities of using this technology are really unlimited because e.g. a student using VR technology can be in a lecture in another city, country or continent, which is an invaluable experience. Another example is a teacher who uses virtual technology in language classes to present a classical novel that is difficult for students to adopt, and shows the places where the action of the novel takes place, which makes it much easier for students to adopt the material. On behalf of Landstede, the seminar participants were introduced to their virtual educational programs in the field of car mechanics and car electronics. Other programs such as DEEPLE (translator) or NEARPOD program for interactive use of PowerPoint presentations were also discussed. Noorderpoort’s policy is to spread knowledge and exchange experiences in all fields for the benefit of humanity.
On April, 10 our students visited the Botanical Garden and the University Museum in Groningen, where they made an experiment regarding the perception of time. As part of the implementation of the project “V2V – Capacity Building of the Western Balkans”, and Professional visit to Groningen in the Netherlands, representatives of several countries participating in the V2V project visited Groningen in the period from April 11, to April 15, 2022. One of the planned and regular activities was a visit to the workshop where our students did internships (AHGarage). Everyone was pleasantly surprised by the expertise and approach to the work responsibilities of our students, as well as their knowledge of the English language. We were especially pleased with the praise given to our students by the representatives of Noorderpoort, the high school center, who were the main organizers of our students’ stay in Groningen, the Netherlands. The owner of the garage, Ali, had no less words of praise, and in the end he said that he would be very glad to host the students of our school again in practice in his garage. At the weekend, April 16, our students accompanied with their teacher Damir, went for a one-day tour of the Dutch capital Amsterdam. It was a beautiful and sunny day, and they enjoyed sightseeing, they took a boat trip through beautiful and interesting canals and they went for a walk through many typical Amsterdam and Dutch streets full of shops and tourists.
Oude Zijde (once an important trading post of the city), Rembrandthuis (the house of the famous painter Rembrandt), Oude Kark (the oldest building in the city), Dam Square, the picturesque Nieuwe Kark (the second oldest building – the church in the city) and Madame Tussaudse Museum were some of the many tourist attractions they saw in Amsterdam. There was not enough time to visit everything in such a large and interesting city, but our students and their teacher Damir were still very happy and satisfied that they could, at least for a day, enjoy the charms of such beautiful city. Everyone eventually agreed that they had to come back again. The second day of the weekend, April 17, our students used to ride bicycles through the streets of Groningen and enjoyed the parks on another beautiful and sunny day. The parks were full of people eagerly awaiting the sunny and warm weather to unpack their picnic blankets and enjoy the sun, so our students did something similar on April, 18. They checked if it was in accordance with the rules of staying in the park and when they were convinced that it was, they organized a barbecue in the nature. The day was beautiful. April, 19 was the last working day of our students in AH Garage with our dear host and garage owner Ali. Despite the fact that it was the last working day for the students, they worked at full capacity. The farewell was a bit emotional because Ali constantly pointed out that the boys performed great and that there was not the slightest problem during their work in AH Garage. In the end, he pointed out that he would be glad to host the students of our school in possible future projects. Damir, their teacher at the time, was very proud of them and our school. On Wednesday, April, 20 on the initiative of Igor, who accompanied our students in the first shift, the classes were organized in workshops in which students from Groningen do internships. It was another good experience for our students as they had a whole school day with the teacher who took them through two assignments. Our students were able to get acquainted with the way the teachers work in practice as well as to perform tasks on the latest equipment. The methods of work of teachers from ROC Noorderpoort do not differ much from the methods of our teachers, but there is a big difference in teachers’ resources and literature. Dutch invest a lot of money in the educational system, what can be seen in every segment of their educational system. That night, a dinner was organized at the Yip Asian Bar & Restaurant where their students have an internship. Our students were hosted by Mr. Hans Buissink, who asked each student about their impressions of the project and the time they spent in Groningen. The students were fluent in their answers and Hans was pleased with what he heard.
On Thursday, April, 21, the last day of their stay in Groningen, our students took another easy tour of the city, but this time by a small boat. They rented an electric boat and viewed Groningen from its many canals. In the afternoon they said goodbye to Ms. Minke Kloppenburg, whose great and selfless effort helped them to succeed. She wanted to hear from the students their impressions of the complete project. She expressed her wish to try to organize the arrival to Groningen of other of our students that she met in an interview in Sarajevo. On April 22, 2022 the mobility of our students in Groningen, the Netherlands, ended and they, together with their teacher Damir, returned to Sarajevo via Vienna. We believe that our students have raised their professional skills to a higher level. They are full of impressions and they have made new friendships. They spent very high quality and meaningful four weeks on mobility in Groningen which will surely remain in their memory for a long time.
